Attending pastry arts college makes you a baking chef

If you have a love of baking and you greatly enjoy creating sweet treats like cakes and tarts, pastry arts school may just be perfect for you. By completing a program at pastry arts college you can emerge as a baking chef or pastry chef, ready to design professional wedding cakes or work in a patisserie or even open your own shop.

Pastry chef classes are exciting and fun

It takes hands-on work to learn the secrets of good baking--not a lot of classroom lectures. While you will learn some baking theory, most of your time at any pastry arts school will be spent actually baking. You will learn through immersion, getting immediate feedback from instructors on your techniques.

During your pastry chef classes, you will learn some of the trickiest pastry and baking skills--and you will learn them from highly-skilled instructors who have perfected these techniques. Some of these include: working with chocolate; classic pastry doughs; cream puff pastry; puff pastry; quick breads and yeast breads, including croissants, danish, and brioche; cakes, including dacquoise and genoise; frozen and hot desserts and how to make them to order in a restaurant; working with sugar, including blown sugar, spun sugar, and marzipan; and much more. Just imagine--you will be baking or working on a pastry technique nearly every day you attend pastry arts college.

Pastry arts colleges offer externships

In addition to learning from the instructors at the college, many pastry arts schools offer another method through which you can train--externships. During an externship, you will move from the classroom to another site to put your newly-learned skills to the test. You may be placed in a hotel, catering kitchen, or restaurant, for example. Some externships are even paid work experiences! Regardless of whether it is paid, though, it is during the externship that you will begin to really master some of the pastry arts techniques.

After pastry chef classes are complete

The time you spend at pastry arts school will vary depending upon the specific pastry arts college you choose; however, you can expect that the best and most thorough training programs will take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years to complete. At the end of the program, you will earn your diploma (also called a Grande Diplome) in pastry arts. Some programs also include a Food Protection Certification, which is a certificate showing that you have learned safe food handling practices.

Talented bakers and pastry chefs are always in demand. So, after you graduate, you should have no trouble finding employment as a baker, caterer, chocolatier, or pastry chef. You can expect to earn anywhere from $20,000 to $36,000 or more as your career develops.
