Choosing an acupuncture school
The art of acupuncture is thousands of years old; however, studying acupuncture in the United States is relatively new. Although there are countless branches of distinctly different types of this traditional ancient medicine, you will not have quite as many options for types of acupuncture schooling. But, there are some different types of acupuncture schools in America--and will find that each school offers training in a particular tradition and style of acupuncture medicine.
The school you choose and the type of training that it offers will have a direct bearing upon what type of acupuncture you will be able to become licensed or certified to practice. After all, if you take training in one style of acupuncture, you will not truly be able to treat patients through another style of acupuncture. So, it is best for you to research the schools you are considering and find out what style or styles they teach before submitting any applications.
Styles taught at acupuncture school
Acupuncture did originate in China; however, there are styles of acupuncture that originated elsewhere that are taught in many schools throughout America. Distinct styles of this type of medicine have developed in Vietnam, Japan, and Korea. Many original styles have come from various parts of China. More recently, acupuncture styles have originated in France and England. All of these styles have common elements and principles, of course. They all agree that health and disease is a reflection of the status of qi in the body. Qi, which flows through channels in the body, can be manipulated through access points--the acupuncture points. The styles mainly differ in exactly where and how qi is manipulated.
You may choose to learn just one style of acupuncture, or you might want to learn more than one style. That choice is yours. About 85% of American practitioners of acupuncture practice Chinese acupuncture. Some also practice pediatric acupuncture.
Acupuncture school requirements for admission
Prerequisites for admittance to acupuncture school vary from school to school; therefore, it is best to check with each school you are considering to find out about any specific requirements they may have. Some schools do require that students have already completed certain college courses, while others simply require that applicants have passed high school science and math courses. Nearly all schools will only allow students who are age 18 or older. Other requirements may be mandated at some schools.
Unlike a lot of colleges, acupuncture schools typically admit students from any state in the country--there is no residency requirement. So, you can choose tQo attend any school that you like or any school that offers the styles of acupuncture which you want to learn rather than having to attend one of the schools is located in the state where you happen to currently live.
