Evaluating chiropractic schools
Chiropractic schools either offer Bachelor's degree programs at the school and then let you go on into chiropractic training, or they require a Bachelor's degree before enrollment and only offer the final years of chiropractic training necessary to become a chiropractor.
Chiropractic colleges teach chiropracticy, more commonly called chiropractic health care. This branch of health care concerns the spinal column and its relationship to your nervous system and your overall health. Chiropractors make actual physical adjustments to the spine, correcting misalignment of vertebrae in the back and neck. Chiropractors don't prescribe medications or perform surgeries. Everything is done through manipulation and realignment of the spine.
Chiropractic school teaches these techniques. Students learn how to manipulate the spine, and also to help patients breathe properly as well as recommend vitamin supplements to patients. They may also suggest patients see other types of doctors for problems beyond the scope of chiropractic healthcare.
The foundation for chiropractic colleges
Chiropractic colleges teach that misalignment of the vertebrae of the spine cause problems far beyond pinched nerves and back pain. While the pain and numbness cause by pinched nerves can be alleviated through spinal alignment, the chiropractor believes that these problems can cause other ailments that are traditionally treated by drugs and surgery.
So chiropractic schools are essentially teaching a kind of holistic health care, in which the whole person is treated rather than just the disease or acute condition. Officially, chiropractic schools teach people to become physicians who primarily treat neuro-muscular-skeletal disorders. It's usually through back or neck pain or pinched nerves that most people will go to a chiropractor initially. While other people would never go to a chiropractor, believing that it's a pseudo-healthcare and not proven to be effective.
Is chiropractic school for you
If you have the desire to see patients and help them manage their health through a drug-free and surgery-free practice, then you may be interested in attending chiropractic school. Despite the beliefs held by some people who aren't familiar with chiropractic health care, it is a regulated and recognized arm of health care. In fact, it's regulated by every state.
That means that people graduating from chiropractic colleges must get a license in order to practice. And there are certain requirements that must be met before they can get the license. Chiropractors must have a Bachelor's degree, as well as a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from an accredited chiropractic college. The Doctor of Chiropractic education can last 3 to 5 years, so it's not uncommon for someone in chiropractic school to complete 7 to 9 years of education before he or she can practice.
If you're interested in chiropractic school, be sure that the school offering the Doctor of Chiropractic degree is properly accredited. The accreditation must come from the Council on Chiropractic Education. If not, you won't be able to get a license to practice.
If you're going from a regular college to a chiropractic school, be prepared to take about 90 hours of credit coursework, even if that's not required for you to get the Bachelor's degree from your school. And all your science courses must be maintained at a C level or above.
