How to Frame a Basement
Written by: R. Ann Sipper
Framing a basement is the first step in determining the entire layout of your downstairs space. This is the part of the project where studs are laid out in the room to create a surface to which drywall will be attached. Just like in new construction, an unfinished basement must be framed to create rooms, closets, and lay the groundwork for any needed plumbing or wiring. There are important things to keep in mind when considering how to frame a basement.
Popular basement framing designs
Most basements and new construction use 16" centers around the room to create the layout. This means studs are centered every 16 inches through the room to set up the walls.
Floor plates and wall plates are used to attach the studs to the walls. This allows for easy installation of the studs. It also means that each stud doesn’t have to be attached directly to the basement wall. As most basements have cinder block or cement walls, that process could be time consuming and compromise the stability of the basement structure.
At the top of the wall, a wall plate is attached directly to the basement wall and a floor plate is attached at the base of the floor. This wood framework is attached to the wall with nails, cement screws, or wall anchors, depending on the material your basement walls are built from.
From there, the studs are screwed or nailed into the wall plates and floor plates. Openings for doors and windows are also accounted for in the framing process.
