Basic bathroom renovation costs
Written by No Doubt Marketing
Your bathroom renovation cost is hard to determine until a contractor has had a look at your bathroom and your ideas for the renovation. The price of remodeling your bathroom includes several different things, like the materials used during the renovation, such as paint, wallpaper, tile, fixtures, and things like your tub, toilet and sink. The estimate will also include the cost of labor and installation of all of these items, any delivery costs like those charged for delivery of items like the bathtub or cabinets, and any unexpected costs, like the need to repair a wall or floor, or the need for extra plumbing or electrician work.
When you think of all that, it's no surprise that a bathroom renovation cost can be very expensive. And while it's really impossible to get an estimate anywhere but from the contractor who will be doing the work, you can figure that an overall bathroom remodel for a bathroom of about 35 or 40 square feet will cost anywhere from about $15,000 to $20,000. The cost also depends on your location. You might get estimates closer to the bottom range in the Midwest, and estimates closer to the higher range if you live on either coast.
Your basic bathroom renovation cost, which should fall somewhere in that range, includes things like a new tub and shower, new toilet, new vanity, ceramic tile in the tub area and the floor, a lighted medicine cabinet installation, and wall covering like paint or paper. And that estimate includes average prices on all those items. A claw foot bathtub with polished brass fixtures and an extra steam shower are going to raise the price considerably.
You can save some of your bathroom renovation costs by doing some of the smaller tasks yourself to save on labor. If you feel confident that you can put in your new toilet, you can do that yourself. Or if you're experienced putting down ceramic tile, that can shave off some of the cost. But you should consider the time it will take you, and the convenience you'll get if you have the contractors do it instead.
That price estimate is also for a bathroom that's problem free and ready to be surface remodeled. Anything that requires changes in plumbing or wiring will add to your bathroom renovations cost. Changing wiring for lighting can be complicated, but it can also be a small job that doesn't add much expense. Plumbing changes, however, can add thousands to your bathroom renovation costs.
Also, if your bathroom isn't in perfect condition, you might need a higher budget. It's a good idea to get at least a few estimates and when you decide on the contractor you want, budget for more than the estimate. If you can make sure you have a few thousand dollars more available, then unexpected problems will cause less stress. Sometimes problems are discovered when removing a tub or toilet that can greatly add to your bathroom renovations costs, so be prepared, just in case.
