Selecting Kitchen Cabinets
Written by No Doubt Marketing
Kitchen cabinets will set the entire style and tone of your kitchen. For many homeowners, the kitchen is the heart of their home and the place where they entertain, gather their family and create memories that last a lifetime. Selecting the right kitchen cabinet design can make all the difference in a kitchen remodel.
Kitchen Cabinetry Price
One of the primary concerns many homeowners have when remodeling their kitchen is the cost of kitchen cabinets. There are several different price points – stock, semi-custom and custom.
Stock Cabinets – Very often, stock kitchen cabinets can be ordered directly from a home improvement store and they may even be immediately available for you to load into your truck and take home at the time you select them. Cabinets come in standard sizes and in a wide variety of styles and colors. Stock kitchen cabinets are an excellent choice for the cost conscious homeowner.
Semi-Custom Cabinets – Semi-custom kitchen cabinetry is built after you place your order and costs more than stock cabinets. Since these cabinets are made to order, they require several weeks to build and deliver. However, if you want a more customized look for your kitchen remodel, semi-custom cabinets are a wonderful option.
Custom Cabinets – Custom cabinets are the most expensive option of kitchen cabinet designs. These cabinets are handmade and built to order, according to the specifications of the homeowner. These cabinets can be made to fit any size, shape or dimension needed, including odd or non-standard sizes or shapes. Since these cabinets are completely made to order, they are very expensive, but offer the greatest flexibility for a kitchen remodel.
Design and Style
Kitchen cabinet designs include a variety of elements, such as construction material, color, door shape and finish. With each design element, there are a wide variety of choices that can be combined with other elements to create an endless array of design styles to fit a wide range of kitchen designs, from old world to contemporary.
The most popular kitchen cabinetry material continues to be wood. Popular hardwoods used for cabinets are oak, cherry and maple. Depending on the type of cabinet chosen, the base of the cabinets may be made from particle board or solid wood, with the doors also made of either plywood, solid wood or particle board. Particle board is often the least expensive choice and it is thought to have less of a tendency to shrink or swell with the weather or change in seasons.
Finally, cabinet design can be completed by selecting cabinet hardware, such as drawer pulls or handles. A wide number of hardware choices are available in several different types of materials, including brushed metal, ceramic, enamel or even artistic, unique, one-of-a-kind handmade hardware.
