Berber carpeting
Written by No Doubt Marketing
In general Berber carpet refers to any carpet which includes two colors. More accurately it is a weave of a carpet and not a carpet material. This is a generally darker speck on lighter background but the term Berber can involve different types of carpet. You can find nylon, olefin and wool Berber carpets and you can sometimes find a combination of materials. (Berber carpets made with a combination of fibers do not stand up as well as those made with one solid fiber)
Berber carpet is the most used and bought carpeting in America. It is generally stain resistant and does not wear down quickly. For this reason it is found most often in high traffic areas like schools but it can also be used in the home. Berber carpet has a long history. It goes practically back to the Stone Age. There are people in Northern Africa known as Berber and they were the first to make the carpets.
Berber carpet, like any other can come in different types. Not only different fibers are involved but you can get Berber carpet with different thicknesses as well. Because Berber carpet in general is great for high traffic it means that it lasts a long time. Generally Berber carpet does not show vacuum marks like other carpets and that is because of the weave of the carpet. There are Berber carpets, which are plusher than others, but they are generally made to stand up well to traffic and to stains. So comfort, while possible, isn't the main function of Berber carpets. It's easy enough to check for yourself by feeling the carpet before you buy it. It is not the most uncomfortable carpet by any means.
One very convenient aspect of this type of carpet is that there are Berber tiles available which make it much easier to install by yourself. You do not need a carpet pad with these and the installation itself is much easier to do yourself as opposed to roll carpeting. Berber tiles are not recommended if you will often be moving heavy furniture across the carpeting. You should always have extra tiles on hand just in case as well as extra carpet adhesive. For do-it-yourselfers and those who really want to save money, Berber tiles may be the way to go.
While high quality Berber carpet is long lasting and stain resistant, it still must be maintained. Deep cleaning this style carpet may be needed more often as dirt gets trapped in the fibers. You should not steam clean too often though or you can lower the overall life of the carpet. Because Berber resists staining and is a durable carpet there is not much complaint about cleaning.
