Determining carpet prices
Written by No Doubt Marketing
Most people replace carpet in order to improve the look of their homes (or businesses). What may look good on first glance however isn't always the best choice. There are differences in carpet, which affect the life and durability of it. In general, the better the carpet, the more it costs. You shouldn't figure just initial cost when compiling figures for how much a carpet will cost. You must also consider how long the carpet will last compared to how much it costs. A better made carpet will last longer than a cheaply made one. It may cost more in the long run on maintenance and replacement for a lower cost carpet than it would to pay a higher price per square foot to begin with.
There are also carpet installation costs to consider. If you have to replace your carpet every 5 years then you will have to hire carpet installers every 5 years. If, however, your carpet lasts for 15 years, you save overall on installation too. There are other things to consider as well when calculating carpet costs:
- Cost of new carpet: Can be anywhere from $4 a square yard (for discount/warehouse carpet) to over $20 per square yard.
- Cost of removal of old carpet: This is not included generally in a new carpet price. You should add about $0.50 per square yard for carpet removal
- Carpet Pad: This can vary but you can estimate about $0.50 per square yard.
- Carpet Installation: Some carpet stores offer installation but you may want to hire your own. Costs can vary considerably for this aspect of a new carpet.
- Maintenance: You should always consider the cost of maintenance with any new carpet.
As you can see, the price ends up being much more than simply the price of the carpet itself. There also may be extra charges if there is a lot of damage to the floorboards beneath the carpet, which has to be repaired first. Many people don't consider all of the true costs of buying a new carpet until it's too late. Removal of the old carpet is something very few people consider. They assume it is part of the cost of installing new carpeting and most often, it is not included. You will also want to get a good carpet pad, one that is not too thin and not too thick. This cost is extra too.
When calculating the cost of getting new carpet you must consider all of the above factors. There are ways to save money short term and long term when getting new carpet installed so you will need to consider if you want to save on the short or long term.
