Buying retail carpet
Written by No Doubt Marketing
There is no doubt that a new carpet can greatly enhance the look of your home and many times makes the whole room look new. The carpet is like the canvas of your room so you will want to choose carefully. Chances are there are many, or at least several retail carpet stores in your area. Before you set off to shop, keep in mind that the retail stores job is to sell. In other words, you cannot believe everything they tell you and you should do a little homework yourself before you go.
There are many different types of carpet. Some are made well and others are not. You will want to choose the carpet that is right for you and not the one the retailer is earning a higher commission on. Have in mind how deep you want the carpet and if you want stain resistant qualities. Know how much you will need (measure yourself and allow extra). Also remember that the sales person is not a carpet installer. Do not let him or her try to tell you anything about installation. Their job is to sell-sell-sell. Many times people just don't know anything about carpeting and are at the mercy of the salespeople but that is leaving you in a very vulnerable spot. The more you buy, the more they make. That means they do not have your best interest in mind.
If you are considering buying from a large home improvement store, the salespeople will probably know absolutely nothing about carpeting. They cannot give you the answers you may need to make a good choice in carpeting. They also may not have the best carpet installers. You should always consider hiring your own installer no matter where you buy your carpet.
If a carpet you are considering comes with a warranty, ask what that means exactly. There are carpet warranties that are literally worthless. Find out if it means the entire carpet would be replaced and make sure you will get that in writing. There are reputable carpet retailers but it is always in your best interest to be on the safe side. As long as sales people work for commission you can never be 100% sure they are being completely honest with you.
If you do buy retail chances are there will be some sort of a warranty, which is very good. Make sure you understand the warranty and what it does and does not cover. Most people do not have a major problem when buying carpet retail but like everything else, there are horror stories in this area as well. Find a salesperson you are comfortable with. If you do not feel comfortable with them, ask for another. Check and double check what the salesperson tells you. Make sure there is a warranty and it is a good one and know what properties you want in a carpet before you go to buy one.
