Pros & cons of wool carpets
Written by No Doubt Marketing
There are many considerations that go into what makes a carpet "good" or "bad." In fact there really is no bad carpet but there are definitely some that are better made and a better deal than others. Among the decisions that have to be made is what type of fiber you want your carpet to be. Many people like wool carpets or are thinking of buying wool carpets. There is some general information about wool carpeting that is good to know before you buy. Buying carpet isn't like buying a small appliance where you can just take it back if it doesn't work out. Buying carpet is more like an investment so you want to choose wisely and carefully.
Wool has been used for over 2000 years and it is made from the fleece of sheep. Like any other product, there are pros and cons to wool carpeting:
Pros:
- Wool hides dirt very well. The fiber is opaque and not transparent so dirt is not seen as easily on wool carpet.
- Wool stands up extremely well to high traffic. It is very strong and resilient.
- Wool is an excellent insulator.
- Wool is flame retardant
- Wool responds very well to steam cleaning. The moisture makes the fiber swell so the dirt is easily removed.
Cons:
- Wool is generally more expensive than some of the other fibers
- Wool stains very easily
- Wool can "fuzz" over time. It is a staple yarn so over a period of time it can get fuzzy
There are those who will have nothing but wool carpeting in their home but then there are others who resist buying it. Obviously the choice is a very personal one but as you can see the pros do outweigh the cons. Much of your choice should depend on what the carpet will be subjected to. If there are small children (who often spill things) then wool may not be the best choice. If there are few people in the home or older people who are less likely to spill things then wool may be perfect. For those who can expect a lot of spilling, nylon may be a better choice in fibers. Wool is one of the higher quality carpet fibers so it isn't for everyone. Nylon and Olefin are alternatives that you can consider when choosing a carpet fiber.
Depending on your taste, preferences and circumstances, wool carpeting may be perfect for your home. Only you can decide that. Wool carpeting is overall a very beautiful and durable choice but there are drawbacks too. All of these things must be considered before choosing a carpet.
