Backyard decks basics
No Doubt Marketing
Backyard decks can be simple sitting areas or they can be virtual showplaces designed for many uses. Just driving around city streets you can view any number of different types of backyard decks and that don't even scratch the surface of what is available. You can have low built or high built decks; one level or multi-level; decks with or without roofs and any shape and size you can imagine.
Many time people will have a basic deck built (or build it themselves) and then add on to it over time. This works best when there is a limited budget. According to Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies, the cost of the average deck project rose 40% between 2004 and 2007. Of course, many people are becoming more elaborate with their backyard decks and adding more amenities. A good number of entertainment events are now held on backyard decks. Then again there are people who still enjoy simple backyard decks.
Depending on what you are looking for in a deck the price is going to vary. For a well-done but relatively simple deck you can expect to spend over $1000. Depending on how elaborate you want to get you can spend upwards of $10,000. If you get the basic deck built you can add on to it as you like. This can include deck benches, pools, hot tubs, multi-levels and entertainment areas.
Backyard decks are becoming an extension of the home for many. There are some that have their decks built specifically for entertaining. More upscale backyard decks even have levels made for being used as dance floors. Of course, most do not go to that extreme but it shows you what is possible in the area of backyard decks. Zoning laws have to be taken into consideration too when planning a backyard deck if you plan to attach the deck to your home. You can alternatively have a deck built that is freestanding and not attached to the home, which gives you more freedom when it comes to design and purpose.
Backyard decks take some consideration so even if you plan to build it yourself you should at least consult with a builder or an architect to make sure it is structurally sound and will adhere to any zoning laws. If you plan to hire someone to do it make sure you coordinate well on the deck design and safety concerns. Also ask for references and to see examples of decks they have built for others. This gives you an idea of what you can expect in the areas of design and expertise.
