Building a porch
No Doubt Marketing
Building a porch can be a do it yourself project but it helps if you have friends to help you and a great set of plans to follow. It is a lot of work and takes patience to complete but that is exactly the type of project some people like. If you have any doubts at all whether you would be able to complete it, call a contractor to build one for you.
When you are building a porch the first thing you will want to decide is where exactly it will go and how big it will be. This information will be necessary when calculating materials needed. Once you have an idea of what you want you should check out your local building codes and zoning laws to see if the porch you want to build is within guidelines. If you get a green light there then you can begin planning the building of your porch. As you work on your porch you will need more inspections to be sure you are staying within code so be sure to plan them accordingly. You will need to know what materials you want used. You can have a wooden porch or cement; you can have an open porch or a covered porch.
Besides considering what you will be using the space for, you will need to keep in mind that the bigger your porch the higher the cost. Materials will be more, labor will be more and if you are doing it yourself, time will be more. It is best to obtain quotes from a couple of contractors in your area. Let them know what you are planning and show them a sketch (perhaps the one you showed the people for the building permit). Have them give you a rough estimate. If you get several of these you will have an idea of about how much it will cost. Only get the estimates close to the time you are planning to build. If you wait too long the quotes may be outdated. The price of lumber and other materials can change at any time.
If you are hiring someone to build it you will want to check references and even ask to see photos of work they have done previously. You might even ask if you can see some of their previous work first hand. This is sometimes possible and it doesn't hurt to ask. Be absolutely sure they have the same picture of your porch in their mind that you do in yours. You will need to decide where you want the doors if it is enclosed and where you want windows. If it is an open porch you will need to decide on railings. There is a lot to consider when building a porch but most people are extremely pleased with the results. Porches add a certain charm and welcoming air to any home. They act as an extension of your entryway to welcome visitors.
