Safely installing electrical fixtures
Written by: No Doubt Marketing
Installing electrical fixtures is one of the few electricity related do-it-yourself projects that most homeowners can safely do themselves. In most cases you will not need any specialized equipment, a toolbox stocked with the basic home repair tools, electrical tape, clear instructions and the fixture itself are all that you need.
The right electrical fixture for the job
One of the first things you will need to determine is exactly what type of fixture you will need to serve your purpose. Often, this is as simple as removing the existing fixture and taking it with you when you purchase the new one. That way you can be sure that the new electrical fixture will fit properly and that the existing wiring is capable of carrying the amount of power that the new fixture will be pulling. The amount of electricity required for different fixtures can vary a great deal. If you get one that draws too much power you may continuously be tripping your circuit breaker or damage your home's wiring.
Installing an electrical lighting fixture
Believe it or not, installing electrical lighting fixtures is one of the easiest electrical projects, especially if you are simply replacing an existing fixture. The wiring for a light fixture is simple and straight forward. Most require working with only two wires. All you need to do is remove the original lighting fixture, paying special attention to which wire connected where, and replace it with the new one using the existing wires and screw on connectors or electrical tape. To make it even simpler, many lighting fixtures are sold in kits that come with the necessary connecting wires, instructions, and any other things needed to safely install it.
Installing general electric fixtures
General electric fixtures can vary a great deal in the level of installation difficulty. The vast majority are relatively simple as long as you have a basic understanding of how electrical current travels through wires and the importance of not getting the wires crossed or attached to the wrong existing wires. All electrical fixtures require at least two wire connections, a positive and a negative. If you connect them incorrectly, you run the risk of shorting out not only the fixture in question but also your entire house. Do not worry, it is not as scary as it seems. Most wires are color coded to help you avoid this problem and the instructions that come with the new fixture should make it very clear which wire carries the positive or negative charge.
In most cases it is possible to safely install electrical fixtures in your home. If, however, you are intimidated by the idea, or if when you get your new fixture home you do not completely understand the instructions, your best bet is to call a licensed electrician. Do it incorrectly and you run the risk of causing a fire or damaging your home's entire wiring system. In both of these cases you will end up paying a great deal more than it would cost to hire someone to simply install the electric fixture for you.
