Garage home offices

You may want to embark on garage remodeling for a variety of
reasons. Many homeowners realize that their garage is a large space that's
being underused while they struggle with lack of space inside their homes and
they remodel to fix this situation. It doesn't matter if your garage is
attached to your home or not, you can still use your garage to create a new
office workspace.
While you could achieve this without garage remodeling by
simply adding a desk, a lamp and a chair, you'll want to actually convert a
section of the garage in to an office workspace. First of all, you won't want
to sit at your office desk and look around at auto parts, sports equipment and
other garage items. If you really think it won't bother you, you always try it
at no risk. But soon you'll probably wish for an actual garage home office
that's separate from the rest of the space.
This conversion can be as simple as adding a petition to
section of an office workspace, or you can do a full-on remodeling job and
build a special room for the workspace. If your garage isn't heated or air
conditioned, you'll want to expand your home heating and AC to cover the
garage. Your garage home office won't get much use if you burn up or freeze
when you're there.
Something to consider when building a garage home office is
the level of security you need. If you have your own business and security is a
big issue, you may want to consider converting the entire garage rather than
just a portion. A garage door isn't as secure as a real door, so if you don't
actually use the garage for a car or in any way that requires a traditional
garage door, considering moving it and building a wall. At the very least, make
sure you have an alarm and a secure door to the outside.
It's much easier and less expensive to add garage home
offices to attached garages than to separate outbuildings. With an attached
garage, you have the telephone writing nearby and much easier to jump off of
than if you were going to need service in an outbuilding. Of course, the closer
the detached garage is to the house, the easier this will be. But with an
attached garage, it's simply much easier to run things like wiring, telephone
wires and even plumbing into the garage, if you want to add a bathroom, for
instance.
You also have to consider the lighting for your office
workspace. The lighting in a standard garage won't do, so you'll need to add
different lighting options in your partitioned garage home office area, or the
room you've added for that purpose.
Also, if your garage isn't that well insulated, position
your new area against the wall it shared with the house rather than an outside
wall. This will make your garage home office less likely to suffer from
temperature extremes.
