Garage shelving is a tool that you can use to finally get a handle on your garage organization.  One of the best ways to make the most of the space in your garage is getting as much of your stuff off the floor and up on garage shelves or hooks.   Before you install your garage storage shelves, there are a few things that you should do first.

The first thing that you should do is clean out the stuff in your garage that you just don’t need.  There are probably things in your garage that you haven’t seen in years.  Go through all of it and make a pile to throw out, give away and keep.  Your pile of items to keep should be the smallest pile of the three.  Once you have gotten everything out of the garage that you will not be storing  you will be able to make a much better estimate of the amount of garage shelving that you will need.

Clean up the garage once you have everything out of it.  Now is a great time to wash down the floors and get all the dirt and grime out of the garage.  Cleaning the garage should be much easier without all the stuff on the floor.

Now you should plan for the items that you will be able to store on garage storage shelves and which items will need to remain on the floor.  Shelving can make a big difference in the organization of the room.  You should use hooks for some larger items like tools and gardening items.  Just find a place for everything so that you always know where to find your items.

You might want to consider garage storage shelves that are in cabinets that you can lock.   If you have expensive tools or equipment that you don’t want to leave laying around the garage, lock them up.  It’s better to be safe than sorry with these items.

When you have all of your items up on garage shelving and hooks, you will be amazed at the amount of floor space you have available.  You might even be able to park your car inside the garage.  Or you could put in a workbench and enjoy the peace and solitude of having your own garage workshop.

Make sure that the garage shelving that you install is capable of handling the weight that you will put on it.  Tools and equipment can be very heavy and if you are planning on loading up a shelf with a lot of tools and items, you don’t want it to collapse on you. 

Plan out your garage reorganization before you begin.  Put your items in places that make sense.  Items and tools that you use frequently should be within easy reach and items that you don’t use very often can be stored on a higher shelf and out of the way.  A good plan will ensure that you organize your garage shelving in a way that makes the most sense.
