Kitchen layouts: functional redesign options
Written by Amy Whittle
Kitchen layouts are the most difficult to design of all rooms in a typical home. In addition to special plumbing and electrical concerns, there are specific design conventions that must be met to create a functional room.
Understanding the kitchen work triangle
All kitchen layouts are formed around the "work triangle." This term is used to specify how different workstations within kitchen layouts should be organized. When implemented correctly, the kitchen work triangle will prevent crowding and provide an efficient use of space.
Kitchen work triangles are composed of three workstations: the food preparation area, the cooking area, and the storage area. Within that layout, you have to consider typical appliances like the sink, stove, and refrigerator. No obstructions or traffic should be present within the kitchen work triangle. Each leg should be 4 to 9 feet long, and the overall perimeter shouldn’t exceed 26 feet.
Basic kitchen layouts
Kitchen layouts are named for the letter their floor plan best resembles:
- U-shaped floor plan. One workstation is placed on each side. This kitchen layout doesn’t encourage foot traffic through the kitchen's work triangle.
- L-shaped floor plan. These are commonly found in homes with open kitchen layouts. An island is often used in this kitchen layout to better delineate the space and add further storage.
- I-shaped floor plan. This layout, commonly referred to as a "galley kitchen,” is best for small spaces. Many professional chefs prefer this type of kitchen because it minimizes the walking distance between stations.
Working with a design professional
Kitchens are typically the most expensive room in a home and something a lot of homebuyers look for when shopping around. So it makes to invest in hiring a dedicated and experienced design professional to get the most out of your kitchen’s value.
Interior designers who specialize in kitchen remodeling, or even residential remodeling, are an excellent choice. When comparing multiple designers, ask to see their portfolios as well as a list of references to see which professional best fits your style.
While many homeowners are hesitant to work with a design professional for small projects, the right interior designer will help your kitchen remodeling project go smoothly. Not only will designers deliver a design customized to your particular needs, budget, and home, but they will also oversee the contractor. This ensures that your project will be finished in a timely manner without any construction flaws.
