Modern kitchen design
Written by No Doubt Marketing
A modern kitchen gives you a beautiful room that's updated
with a contemporary look. Modern kitchen design is something that will work
well in many homes, but if your home was built (or is being built) according to
certain architectural styles, you may have to compromise by including some
modern conveniences in your kitchen to make it updated without giving it a
wholly modern style.
A modern home kitchen is one that's usually considered to
have clean lines, no clutter and some geometric angles or themes. Clear
counters or counters with only the necessities showing are a hallmark of the
design, in direct contrast to a country kitchen which can seem much busier with
items on the countertops and table serving both practical and decorative
purposes.
Today's modern kitchen usually has a very minimalist look,
with few knick-knacks or decorative items that don't fit the clean-lines of the
theme. That doesn't mean the kitchen must be empty and the counters bare. But
anything out, like a knife block or a canister of utensils, must look like it
belongs. A magnetic knife strip lets the metal blades show, and metal fits well
in a modern kitchen design. A stainless steel canister of utensils would work
equally well.
Stainless steel is the darling material of modern kitchen
design, as are the look of chrome and most metals. Metal and glass, because of
their naturally clean, smooth lines, work well in any modern scheme.
Lighting is important in any kitchen, but it might be even
more important in a modern kitchen design. Proper lighting will show off the
reflective sparkle of glass and metal, and illuminate work spaces to make the
kitchen practical. Track lighting works well as do spot lights, especially
beneath the countertops to use as task lighting.
You can still have wood in a modern home kitchen, but your
choice of wood is limited. Dark, rich woods like you might find in country
cabinets won't work, but light woods that don't have particularly distinctive
grains or patterns can fit in. Knotty woods give too much curve and texture to
work well without the otherwise straight and geometrical lines, but light, even
varieties can be used for beautiful cabinetry.
A modern home kitchen should also be designed to be
green—not in color, but in environmentally friendliness. Using LED spotlighting
in the place of regular bulbs costs more, but uses less energy. Incorporate a
special pull-out cabinet to house recyclable bins but keep them out of sight.
Opt for a dishwasher that uses less water or cleans well with environmentally
friendly dishwashing solution. And appliances that run on electricity rather
than natural gas are a cleaner way to furnish your kitchen.
In your modern kitchen, don't forget the rooms that are
directly off the kitchen. While you do want to make sure the style works with
your house overall, you want to make sure there's no severe disconnect when
walking from the kitchen into the hallway or the next room. Be sure some
elements of your modern kitchen design are included there to make the
transition more natural.
