Furniture staining is generally done for one reason and that is to enhance or restore the beauty of wood furniture. Whether it is new, unfinished furniture that you bought or pieces of furniture that you want to sand and re-stain, the results are going to be remarkable. This is why many people go to flea markets and often are found picking out the dingiest piece of furniture there. It is because they know that once it is sanded and stained it can be a stunning piece of furniture.

Staining furniture is typically a 3 day process. On day one, you will want to thoroughly sand and clean every inch of the wood. On day two, you can sand the piece and on day three, you will apply the finish coat of urethane or wax. On the fourth day, and many days after, you will look in amazement at your beautiful “new” furniture.

Since there are so many types of stain you may want to check with the salesperson and tell them what you are working on. Often they can recommend a stain but do not let them talk you into an “all in one” stain because this takes away from the control of color and depth you can achieve by doing each step of the staining. Once you know what type of stain you need you can choose a color. You should get a good foam brush for application of the stain. The foam brushes glide the stain on easily and also get into corners well. Don’t forget your finishing coat. There are several types of these, too, including; gloss, eggshell, matte or satin.

Many people prefer to do their staining projects outside where they will not have to clean up the sanded wood or deal with any odors from the stain. If you do work outside, just make sure there are not a lot of leaves and wind that could fly onto your stained furniture and stick. If you do your furniture staining inside, use a drop cloth and have the vacuum handy. Also make sure that once you apply the stain you can open a window or otherwise ventilate the room.

One very important thing to remember when staining furniture is to wipe the furniture off after you have sanded. Failure to do this can lead to a very grainy finish. Be sure to get in any grooves or corners too. Don’t try to hurry the process along. Enjoy each phase of the transformation; trying to hurry the process will give you a sloppy result. Take pride in each step of the staining process. You will appreciate that you did once you are looking at your beautiful piece of furniture. Be sure to ask for help if you need it but other than that, you should thoroughly enjoy staining your furniture. Take before and after pictures. In fact, after each phase is complete, snap a picture so you can see how much transformation there really was.
