If you haven’t been to a paint store recently, you are going to be amazed at the array of colors and color variations available now. You may also be surprised of the choice of brands and styles of paint that you have to choose from.

Latex paint is water based and cleans up easily. It is the number one choice for the majority of people. Oil based paint stands up to traffic better and lasts longer, but takes longer to dry and needs to be cleaned with turpentine or a solvent. As far as brands go, it may be best to either stick with the well known names or ask other people what they recommend. In many cases, you can get just as good of a look with a less expensive brand, but there is no guarantee.

When deciding to paint a room, you will need to take into consideration the colors that are already in there. For example, if you are painting your living room, you will need to base your wall color on the colors of your furniture, curtains and other items in the room. If you do not have swatches of these then you should take a clear picture of the room from every angle - and even some close ups of the furniture - and carry those pictures with you when you go paint shopping. Swatches are best but of course if you are painting an already established home, you won’t have those.

Colors to tend to fade just a bit when subject to direct sunlight. Of course, this does not happen overnight but you want to be aware of it. When you choose a color for your interior, pick a color that is a background to the other items in your room. When you see a color you think may look good, be sure to look at the entire “family” of colors in that line. For example if you pick a light blue color, check the colors just lighter and darker to that color to see if they match better or if you like them more. Now look at your pictures and see how they match up to that. There is no law that says you have to decorate a certain way or use certain colors, but by using interior paint that is close to the basic background color of the objects in your room, you keep an even tone to your decorating and it looks great. If you are going to be using a wall paper border, bring that with you as well to match up to the paint.

There are many things to consider when painting but finding the right color for your interior painting can be fun. Remember that you are going to be more aware of any subtle differences than anyone else is and everyone has their own decorating style. Once you have your color choice you need to decide if you want a matte finish or glossy. Once that is done, you are well on your way to your beautiful, newly painted room.
