Painting trim
Written by No Doubt Marketing
If you haven’t painted the trim of your rooms prior to having them set in place then you can still paint them where they are. You will want to use masking tape to protect the areas around the trim and you should start from the top of the room. Usually it is best to use a 1˝ - 2” brush for interior trims. Angled brushes work best. Painting trim is best done in sections and you want to end one section by blending it into the previous one.
You should paint the moldings and trim before you paint windows and doors. Once the trim is done, allow it to dry before starting on anything else. Be sure you are happy with the end result (after it dries) before you continue. If your trim is to be a different color than your walls, you will want to make sure you have masking tape up to protect from getting the trim color on the walls – that is, unless you are painting the trim first. Painters even disagree which is best to do first so just pick one and go with it. It often adds character to a room to have the trim a different color than the walls. Using paint swatches can help you decide which you would rather do. Tape the trim color to the trim and the wall color to the wall and see how they look together.
Since there are so many colors and color variations, you can really have a time deciding what color to use when painting trim. It is best with this particular part of painting to use a relevant color. It should be relevant either to the wall color or flooring. However, it is your house and you can paint and decorate as you choose, as long as you are happy with the end result. When painting trim, one of the most difficult things to do is paint the baseboard near carpeting. You will want to use an edger or something to put between the carpeting and your trim while you are painting. Your trim paint should look smooth and flawless. There should be no lines or variations of color. If there is, slowly go back over it until the color is uniform. Sometimes this takes a couple of tries.
If you are a veteran painter then you should have no problem, but for those who don’t have much experience, painting the trim can be a challenge. You can do it. It may take a couple of tries but once you get the hang of it, the rest is easy. Move steadily but not too slowly. You want to work in smaller sections, which usually mean inches on the trim and no more than 2 or 3 feet at a time on the baseboards. Always paint back into the previously painted area and smooth out. Once you have painted trims and baseboards the first time, each time afterwards gets easier.
