Spanish tile roof

Written by No Doubt Marketing

A Spanish tile roof truly stands out from the crowd of different kinds of roof surfaces, such as asphalt shingles, and flat roof membranes. Spanish tile roofs are distinctive and colorful, and are also long lasting.

The look of Spanish tile works particularly well with a stucco home, weather or not it has a Spanish or Mexican theme to its architecture. Of course, it does work particularly well if the home does have a southwestern or Mexican design.

It's the most common type of clay tile made, and is a barrel shaped tile that is always red. The color comes from the hematite mineral in the clay.

These tiles are called red, but actually come in a variety of shades that are produced by the clay, including deep red, but also brown and tan. These color variations can appear as very distinctive looks and give a strikingly beautiful appearance in the light of day. Spanish tile roofing adds a feel of mystery and ambiance to a home at night as well.

Antique clay tiles are many different shades as well, with many shades of red and some that are even green, thanks to the iron oxide forming the hematite that is used to color the tile.

These tile roofs are extremely popular because the tiles are all natural made from naturally occurring clay that is fired at a high temperature. Besides being beautiful and environmentally friendly, these Spanish tile roofs are also durable. The tiles can last for dozens, even hundreds of years.

There are several different designs of Spanish tile roofs available now, and many are modern versions of an old favorite.

The one piece S clay is a large tile, shaped like a long "S". It is a popular style commonly found on homes and traditional buildings in the southwest.

The mission style tile is the traditional tile, updated for a modern, southwestern home. It comes in the shape of a half circle, and the tiles are installed in an alternating pattern, with one row being installed facing up, while the next row is facing down and overlaps the first row.

The Monarch mission style is very similar to the mission style, but it is smaller, and all the rows are installed facing down.

Romano pan is a traditional style that is flat with upturned edges. Antique Spanish tiles are also extremely popular, with many homeowners and businesses owners being very fond of the patina found on the tiles.

Modern versions of these tiles can be made to look like shake shingles or wood shingles, or even slate.

A very significant drawback of a Spanish tile roof is that it is quite a bit heavier than a traditional asphalt shingle roof. In fact, the decision to install a tile roof needs to be made in the early stages of home construction, since the home structure must be increased in order to accommodate the additional weight.

Newer versions of this tile, however, is made in a light-weight version, which may allow the owner of a current home to install a tile roof without structural modifications.
