Rotary screw compressors are slightly more expensive, but are much better for continuous use. Reciprocating or piston compressors are the most affordable and are most commonly found in portable applications or home workshops. Centrifugal compressors are almost exclusively used in huge industrial applications where huge volumes of air are required.

Your PSI (pounds per square inch) requirements will be determined by your tools. Take the single highest PSI requirement from any tool you'll be using and bump it up slightly. (If your tools require 90 PSI, buy an air compressor that provides 100 PSI to make sure you always have enough pressure.) Don't overdo it, though: running a compressor at 120 or 150 PSI when you only need 90 is a waste of electricity.

Most compressors run on electricity, with smaller models using standard 110v, single-phase power and larger industrial models using 208v, 230v, or 460v three-phase power. For outdoor or portable use, a gasoline or diesel engine is a better choice. Gas and diesel engines produce more noise and heat, but they are usually cheaper to operate than electric compressors.
