What to look for in an access control lock

An access control lock is a simple security solution for your business. These keyless entry solutions are available as mechanical or electronic locks, using keypads, fingerprints, security tokens, access cards, or a combination of unlocking methods.

Access control lock variations

Mechanical keyless locks - This type of access control lock uses a pushbutton combination lock with a deadbolt. They are weatherproof and are available in different finishes. There are also mechanical keyless locks that have an added key entry option. Mechanical keyless locks do not need any battery or electrical power to operate, and they're very inexpensive. But combinations can be shared and changing them can be a hassle.

Electronic keypad door locks - This type of access control lock may use an electronic interface with a numerical keypad, security tokens or biometric scanners. Security tokens can include swipe cards or smart cards. Biometric locks can scan fingerprints or offer digital voice recognition.

Key considerations

Durability - When purchasing an access control lock, consider durability. High-traffic doors will need more durable locks than entryways with minimal traffic. Durability should be based on how many uses a day the lock will get, not just on the number of people accessing the door, since some employees may use the door 10 or 20 times a day.

Ease of use - Combination locks are easy to change as far as access control locks go, but they may also cause difficulty for those who do not remember their access codes for entry.

Staff expansion - When considering fingerprint access, consider how much turnover your business has, or how many new employees (and fingerprints) you may need to add in the coming months and years. It is easier to hand out combinations to employees than it is to add fingerprints to the system.

Electrical reliance - Depending on where your business is located, electrical power may not be 100 percent reliable during certain times of the year. Consider this when deciding between a mechanical keyless lock or an electronic keyless lock.

Backup keyed entry - A key backup is useful for keypad locks if you are concerned about forgetting the combination. Having a key backup also leaves the entry vulnerable to the same security issues as having keyed entry in the first place.

Also consider the type of handle you would like -- door knob, latch handles or lever handles -- and if you need an optional panic bar. Double-sided door options are also available. The type of door your business currently has may also help determine the best lock for your business.
