"When you are evaluating companies to do your install. Make sure the company is licensed as a contractor in your city to do such installs. If they are not then do not go with them. Also check the BBB to see if they have a clean record or have resolved all open issues."

Look into the details of a package

"Be sure to research the features of the products included in a packaged security system. You may not need half of the items. You may likely find that the items you do need are not provided in the quantity you need, forcing you to buy additional hardware which can cost a whole lot more than you can imagine. For example, a second motion sensor can cost up to $250."

Scope out your situation

"1) Be certain that in your area a permit is not required before installation. 2) If you live in a condo association or homeowners assoc., you may need approval from the board of directors. 3) If you want the keypad in a particular location, you must have a telephone connection and an electrical outlet in close proximity for basic installation package."

"When obtaining your quote for a home security system, be sure to advise the company of the type of windows that you have in your home, such as side openings, & whether the window has crank openers verses the standard slider windows. This will help them determine the type of monitor that is best utilized for your application."

Thorough research is key

"Take time to research everything about Home Security Systems before you decide which company to go with. Make sure your system uses non-proprietary components. Also look up the company you are considering through the Better Business Bureau. This will be very helpful if you are torn between a couple of different companies."

Learn what all the fees are

"Watch not only A) monthly price for monitoring but also B) install fee and C) activation fee if any.

Also look closely at:
1) Warranty (1st year should be 100% and many only offer 90 days). A lifetime warranty with a flat "trip charge" is what we settled on, and it only made our monitoring 32.99 per month.

2) Be very careful ... many companies DO NOT mention an hourly service rate if something goes wrong, then charge you $50.00 or even $100.00 an hour for service!

Check and see if they participate in any related associations, and which ones. If the provide this info, call the associations! Don't just assume it means they are in good standing.

Lastly -don't take a quote or do business with anyone that doesn't thoroughly walk through your home with you and address concerns."
