Clip Art
A collection of graphic elements that can be used in a design. Clip art generally excludes photographs,
fine art works, and illustrations.
Digital Stock Photos
Digitized photos that are delivered to users in CD-ROM format. Images are either available as
scanned photos, or as digital objects. Digital stock photos usually do not incur royalty fees.
License Fees
A fee for the rights to reproduce or change an image. Depending on the project, price can range
from as little as $30 to many thousands of dollars.
Model Release
A legal form models sign to indicate they have given permission for their image to be disseminated
as stock photography and have received adequate compensation for their work.
Rights-protected Photos
Photos that must be leased from an agency for a one-time negotiable fee based on how the photo will be used.
Royalty-free Photos
Photos with few restrictions on image manipulation. These photographs can be purchased for a
one-time, nominal fee for unlimited usage.
Source Images
35mm slides or 4" x 5" transparencies of the image. Source images may provide better quality
reproduction, particularly if you do not require a digital file.
Stock Photography Agencies
Vendors who rent images to users on a per use basis. Once a prospective buyer calls in with a
request, agency researchers will make selections of photographs they deem appropriate for the
user. Final selections are delivered to the user for a fee.
