Asynchronous
A group training method that allows participants to follow online group discussions on their
own time, like on a bulletin board or a news forum.
Computer based training (CBT)
Also called computer based instruction (CBI), this method uses CD-ROMs to deliver interactive,
desktop training on all the topics traditionally covered in instructor-led sessions, for about
half the cost.
Courseware a la carte
Print, video, audiotape, or computer-based training programs that can provide most companies
with, say, basic managerial or customer service training right out of the box. Also called "off-the-shelf" programs.
Recent a la carte innovations include training programs that come pre-packaged with Web courseware,
bulletin board and chat features, and instructor support.
Interactivity
The degree to which users can work actively with the content.
Kitchen-sink systems
These software systems include "everything but the kitchen sink" - they will write, host, deliver,
assess and administer tests and training for WBT programs. Kitchen sink systems also allow businesses
to combine their off-the-shelf training with customized programs, and to integrate their online
learning with other electronic learning systems.
Synchronous
A group training method which requires all participants to be online at the same time, like chat
or live video.
Web based training (WBT)
Also called Web-based instruction (WBI), this method takes learning to the Internet by incorporating
live instructor chats with bulletin boards and online audio-visual material.
