VoIP phone system market disrupted by emerging technologies, report says

February 2, 2012

The market for VoIP phone systems is expected to undergo some changes in the coming years as new technologies and trends emerge within the enterprise. As a result, service providers will invest about $6.8 billion on core voice equipment, according to a new study by Dell'Oro Group. While this may be less spending than the past, it isn't necessarily a bad thing for the market.

In fact, as the revenue from circuit switching - the act of migrating traffic from circuits to VoIP lines - decreases slightly, profits generated from software-based VoIP phone systems will grow by nearly 20 percent, the report noted. This is partially driven by the increased use of cloud-based services and SIP trunking, the news source reported.

The increased adoption of voice over long-term evolution will also help the market.

"This year, we expect to see commercial launches of VoLTE services in North America," said analyst Chris DePuy. "The underlying VoLTE infrastructure is unique from prior generations of wireless voice core equipment because it is software-based,"

According to an NPD In-Stat report, small and medium-sized businesses will spend around $16 billion on VoIP phone systems by 2015. This is because the mobility and efficiency of the technology can help them remain competitive.
