Phil Bishop

Phil Bishop is a UK-based construction journalist with more than 25 years experience. He began his career with the UK weekly New Civil Engineer, where in the 1990s he was news editor. He also wrote for stable-mate publications Construction Today, New Builder and Private Finance Quarterly.

In 1997 he was recruited to take over as editor of the international magazine Cranes Today. During his seven years there, he launched the ConnectingCranes.com website and email news bulletin and published a history of mobile cranes. He also launched Hoist, the international factory crane magazine, and Cranes Today China, the first Chinese language magazine for the lifting industry.

As a freelance writer for the past 10 years, he has written for numerous UK and international construction-related publications. Since 2010 he has been online editor of The Construction Index. He also files weekly blog posts for MachineryZone.

Phil’s career has seen him report from such diverse locations as the construction of irrigation canals in Peru to nuclear power plants and palaces in Romania. He has also filed on-the-spot reports on several emergency response scenarios, including gas explosions in Guadalajara (Mexico) and Edinburgh (Scotland), and terrorist atrocities in Lockerbie (Scotland) and New York City’s Ground Zero.

Phil is also a hardened veteran of the construction machinery trade show circuit, having attended six Bauma fairs in Munich, four Conexpos in Las Vegas and three Intermats in Paris.
