Buying used generators can be a smart way to provide backup electrical power for your business without breaking the bank. Standby generators, by definition, are only used during power outages, so you may find 10- or 20-year old models with only a few hundred hours of use or less.
Used generators are a smart investment because if well-maintained, generators can last quite a long time. However, they do require consistent maintenance. Most of the wear is concentrated on the motor, so make sure your dealer changes the oil and spark plugs, replaces the coolant, inspects all hoses and belts, and does any other routine maintenance that might be called for.
You can often save 25% to 50% or more by buying a used generator. However, you won’t get two years of warranty coverage as you typically would on a new model. As in many other industries, there’s a market both for “remanufactured” generators and as-is used generators. Remanufactured models have been completely overhauled – in addition to basic maintenance, they’ve gone through a more thorough reconditioning, had worn parts replaced, and may carry a basic 90-warranty.
Keep in mind that for older generators, it may be hard to find accessories such as enclosures. Try to find a model that has all the basic accessories you need.
When purchasing portable equipment, used generators are more of a gamble. Gasoline-powered portable generators tend to take more abuse, and the smaller 3600 RPM engines they use aren’t as reliable and long-lasting as the 1800 RPM engines found on most diesel backup generators. Also, since they cost much less to begin with, your overall savings are lower. It’s probably best to choose new equipment when buying portable generators.
