Choosing your CCTV cameras

Obviously, you’ll want to buy cameras that are compatible with whatever security software you have installed, as well as monitors that will display the footage you capture. Fortunately, modern technology ensures that most systems are compatible.

Some CCTV cameras produce black and white images, while others are optimized for color footage. Most color CCTV cameras allow you to flip a switch and record in color or black and white mode. You'll also want to determine the level of resolution you need in the images. Surveillance for theft, for example, would require a high resolution so you can make out pertinent details for arrests.

You'll need to decide if your CCTV system needs to be equipped with both audio and video, which usually isn't required for non-sensitive areas. Many cameras come audio-enabled, but there are specific laws that prevent you from recording audio footage without consent. Make sure you check state and federal regulations before using CCTV audio capabilities.
