Think big picture

"When planning to renovate and you need portable on site storage, look carefully at your options.

Sometime what initially seems more expensive (PODS for example) because of a higher monthly rental charge, may turn out to be a bargain when you consider the delivery and pick up fees of other companies.

So look at the total picture. That is the time like of your need and the pickup and delivery costs. Add it all up before you pick a "bargain" based on the monthly rental cost alone."

Current Rating:

Grade A ratings are important

"When buying a used cargo container, ensure that the unit is rated grade "A", which is to say that it is wind and water tight. Anything less will leak. Also ensure that you have at least 150-200 feet of space for a truck to maneuver if you choose to unload a 20 foot storage container with a tilt bed trailer, or 250-300 for a 40 foot unit."

Find out about all the fees

"When looking to buy or rent a storage container always ask if they have any special or "hidden" charges. I found most companies who advertised lower rates up front also had hidden charges on the contract that made them more expensive than those who show all fees up front."

"When purchasing a storage container, consider larger sizes (i.e. 40'). We were originally interested in purchasing a 20' container until we discovered that we could buy a 40' model - twice as much storage - for just about 15% more."

"If you are in the market for a container, keep in mind the security level you might need. Anything of value is subject to theft. Believe me when I tell you a high security lock box is a great deal and they do work. Little money great service."

"If you are interested in buying a storage container it is worth the time to travel to a container broker and view what the vendor has in stock and for what amount of money. Condition of a storage container is subjective. Your definition of great condition may be very different than the vendor's. Storage container brokers often have a huge inventory and going to the brokers facility enables you to cut the best deal for a purchase."

"Always shop around and see what kind of service overall the company is giving you. For example don't buy from anyone that can't treat you with respect on the phone when you talk to them -- apparently they don't care!"
