Door security access pricing

Estimating the costs for a door security access systems is difficult: most access control vendors will want to come take a look at your facility and discuss your needs in detail before providing you with estimates.

That said, there are some general costs you can keep in mind. A complete keypad or card system for single door security access is typically $1500 to $2500 installed. The more doors you add, the lower the per-door price is. Truly budget-minded companies can buy components online and do their own installation, but saving a couple of hundred dollars isn’t really worth it if it lowers your company security. Make sure you have qualified personnel to handle your door security installation if you go this route.

The full range of options is much larger. Integrated locks with keypads, designed as standalone access control points, can be purchased for $200. Iris scanning systems are much more expensive and can easily reach $10,000 or more for a single access point, but those full-scale access control systems are generally overkill for most businesses.

Make sure you get commercial-grade door security access control. Many manufacturers produce residential versions that are considerably cheaper – but they are not as reliable and not built for the same amount of use as commercial systems.

Buying tips

• Stay in touch. Keep your new building management involved in your evaluation – you may need permission to do certain types of installation.
• Be prepared for failure. Whichever type of door security you choose should be “fail secure”, meaning if the power goes out, the door remains locked from the outside. All security doors have to allow people to leave the area in the event of a power failure.
• Reuse equipment. Hardware – door locks, security sensors, and access card readers or keypads – is fairly interchangeable between different systems, so upgrades and add-ons can incorporate existing materials.
